Sriram Panchu Profile PictureSriram Panchu is a Senior Advocate and Mediator. He is acknowledged as a pioneer of mediation in India. From the 1990s, he has been mediating cases and creating awareness about the concept of mediation through his writings and speeches. He was instrumental in creating India’s first court-annexed mediation centre, a model replicated by other Courts in the country with his help. He has trained over 500 mediators.

Mr. Panchu has mediated a number of cases including several high profile ones. He mediated the Standard Motors case which recorded one of the highest settlements in court-annexed mediations. In the private mediation field, he has handled disputes involving major enterprises.

Recently, he was appointed by the Supreme Court of India to mediate a 50- year-old boundary dispute between the States of Assam and Nagaland in Northeast India. The Court has also appointed him to mediate a dispute involving the Parsi Punchayat in Bombay. 

His comprehensive manual, Mediation: Practice and Law, has been recently published by LexisNexis, Butterworths. He is also the author of Settle for More — The Why, How and When of Mediation, the first book of its kind to introduce mediation to the Indian audience.

He is a founder member and vice president of the Association of Indian Mediators launched in March 2013. He is  also the founder of the Indian Centre for Mediation and Dispute Resolution and of Imediate India, a member of the Advisory Panel of the Asian Journal of Mediation, and former editor of the newsletter of the Mediation Committee of the International Bar Association.

Apart from his conventional law practice and mediation, he has done a number of public interest cases in the fields of good governance, curbing corruption, environmental protection and consumer rights. He serves on the boards of several charitable and public institutions.

  • Speech on 'Mediation-The Way Forward' at the launch of the Association of Indian Mediators on 29-30th March, 2013. 
  • Panellist on discussion on ADR in 'Trademark Litigation and Settlement through ADR' at the INTA Trademark Practice Trends in India Conference on 08-09th February, 2013. 
  • Panellist on the discussion on ‘Strengthening Formal and Informal Mechanisms of Access to Justice in India’ during the India Day organised by the World Bank as part of the Law, Justice and Development Week in Washington (December 2012).
  • Speaker at the Conference on ‘Mediation and North East Initiative’ organised by the Gauhati High Court Mediation Centre, in association with the Indian Law Institute, Assam Chapter (November 2012).
  • Speaker at the Conference on Unlocking disputes: Common Challenges, Approaches and Opportunities in International ADR in India and the UK organised by the Law Society of England and Wales on 08th October, 2012 in New Delhi.
